Teaching goals

1. Target language

Expressions: take up, lack of, lose sight of, sweep up, catch sight of

Patterns: Worried about the journey, I was unsettled for the first few days…

2. Ability goals

Help the Ss catch the main idea and important details of the passage.

Help the Ss get to know something about the life in the future.

Help the Ss finish the reading tasks by using different reading strategies: word-guessing, skimming, scanning etc.

Teaching important & difficult points

Compare life in the past, at present and in the future.

What is life in the future like? What changes will take place?

Teaching methods

Fast and careful reading; asking and answering activity; individual, pair and group work.

Step I Warming Up

Show some pictures of life in the past, at present and in the future to the Ss, period by period.

Get Ss to .talk about what the life will be like in the future.

Step Ⅱ Pre-reading

Talk about the title and the pictures in the text

Get Ss to predict the main idea of the passage.

Step Ⅲ Reading

Task1 Fast-reading

1)Ask Ss to read the passage quickly and summarize the main idea of the passage

2) Divide the passage into three parts

Task 2 Careful-reading

Ask Ss to read the passage paragraph by paragraph and finish the reading exercise.

1) Read para.1 and answer the following questions.

2) Put the items into the right order according to the passage

3) Fill in the blanks

4) Finish the chart and answer the question.

Task 3 Read the text again and choose the best answer

Task 4 Post-reading

Discussion: What should we do to make a better future

Ask Ss to discuss the following problems in groups then invite some of them to report the ideas.

Housing

Population

Pollution

Global warming (greenhouse effect)

Traffic

Hunger

Step Ⅴ Homework

Read the text again and finish the summary of the passage
