Teaching Material Analysis

The topic of this unit is about English around the world. It introduces that English plays an important role in the world and there exists a lot of differences between British English and American English, which makes students learn more about English. This part gets students to know the importance of English and love their own country and language.

This part is the reading part of this unit. It mainly introduces the historical reasons why English is popular around the world.

Teaching keys

(1) Get the students to learn different reading skills

(2)Get the students to learn about the English language.

1. Knowledge objective

Ability Objective

Develop the students’ reading abilities and let them know some reading strategies, such as skimming, scanning and so on.

Emotion Objective

Have students know the importance of learning English. Develop their cross-cultural awareness and global awareness. Expand their horizon. What’s more, develop their patriotism.

StepⅠWarming up

Have a look at some pictures of five famous English movies

(Design purpose: Stimulate students’ learning interest and let them know about English movies)

StepⅡ Lead-in

Think about it

Question: Why are those movies popular around the world?

Let the students discuss the question with their desk mates. Then teacher ask some students to share their answers.

(Design purpose: Lead to today’s topic: English)

Step Ⅲ Skimming

Let students read the passage quickly and answer the questions below.

1.Choose the main idea of the text.

A. How to learn English well

B. The brief history of Modern English

C. The way to England

D. The difference between Modern English and Old English

2. Match the main idea of each paragraph

(Design purpose: Have the students master the main idea of this passage. Make student know the structure of this passage and main meaning of each part.)
